Transcription: The laser diode generates the light beam which is focused on the disk surface by a series of lenses. Reflected by pits and lands, the beam is deflected by the cylindrical lens to the photodiode. It measures the intensity of each pulse of light and generates either a positive or a negative signal which are sent to the computer as 1s and 0s.
